May Long Weekend

We have been taking in some proper summer fun of late.  Our May long weekend was spent in The Columbia Valley hiking, biking, golfing and swimming with Aba and Grandad.   The weekends festivities were brightened by great weather, many wildlife spottings, some great barbeque creations from Chef David, and the news of baby Abigail's safe arrival and healthy status.  Hope everyone enjoyed their weekends as well.

Welcome Baby Abigail!

We welcomed a new niece/cousin today! Auntie Karen gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Abigail. Congratulations Karen, Ryan and big brothers Samuel and Joshua. We can't wait to meet the newest addition to the family!

The Gum Incident

(A lesson about midnight snacks)

 

I woke up today with gum in my bed,

Gum on my nose,

Gum on my head.

Gum on my hair,

Gum on my toes,

Gum all over my clean night clothes!

I tried to get up,

But I was stuck tight,

From all of the gum that had gathered that night.

I tried and I tried and then (Oh gee!)

A sticky POP and I was free!

 

Mother's Day Weekend

Eschewing carnations and chocolate (not thast there is anything wrong with that) this year, the VonHonnets had a fantastic weekend celebrating the mothers in their lives both in the mountains and on the grasslands.  Nadia and several friends ran the Rocky Mountain Soap Women's Run at the Canmore Nordic centre.  The whole family cheered on and vigourously rung the complementary cowbells provided.  We followed that with a hike at Grassi Lakes... a family favorite.   On Mother's day a picnic on the prairie at Glenbow Ranch Park was in order for a complete change of scenery.  We had a great day - with 25 degree weather not hurting a bit.

Month End Recap

April has been generally kind around these parts, the usual mixed bag of sunny shorts weather, and 6inch snowfalls... though recent rain will finally green everything up in a hurry.  We thought we would post some random happenings for our family since Easter.  Brendan got out to the coast to attend a conference and visit with the VanIsle family.  Ben's Kindergarten class put on a great rendition of the "Nanny Goats Gruff" that was followed up with a parent/child luncheon.  Great fun, and adorable "kids".  Nadia, her sister, and some friends raced the Calgary Police Half marathon.  Pretty much everybody met or exceeded their expectations in sunny weather... and the kids got their cheer on.  Check out some shots here.

Springing into Spring/Happy Easter!

The kids have lived it up over Spring break in our strange but great combination of Spring Alberta weather - dry and warmish in Calgary, snowy in the mountains.  We have gotten in four days of skiing (downhill and cross country) over the past 10 days, yet are enjoying the first green shoots on the lawn, finding furtive tulip tips, and (unusual for Calgary in late March) Brendan even squeezed in a mountain bike ride and golf round.  The kids also kept busy visiting the new penguin exhibit at the zoo, practicing at the driving range, geocaching for treasure, and watching the Lorax in 3D at the movie theatre.  On Easter Sunday we were kept "hopping" with Church in the AM, 2 egg hunts, and a bustling family dinner.  Perhaps we might even get a touch of spring cleaning done tomorrow before normal life fires up again on Tuesday... unless we find something better to do!  Please have a glance at the March 2012 and April 2012 photo albums.

We had a fun visit to the new science centre in town last weekend.  Unfortunately we forgot our camera, but we did find one of our creations on their website.  I think it goes without saying that the males in the family were responsible:)  They had fun with the animation section of the open studio.

70 Years back in Time

As part of Alexander's major research project for Grade 2, we visited the Bomber Command Museum of Canada (the only museum in the world dedicated to WW2 bombers) in Nanton, AB. to research his chosen topic of Lancaster heavy bombers.  Here, we were able to read about their role in the war, look at vintage artifacts from that era, find out about the plane that Great Grandpa Ted flew, and actually get inside one of the very few surviving Lancaster planes left in the world.  Needless to say, Alex is charged up for his project now!  Check out the pictures in the February folder. 

January/February Catch-up

It has been quite a month in our household passing around colds, flus and strep throat.  Thankfully, we seem to be all on the mend now (knock on wood).  Through the illness we have still managed to stay busy.  January saw Alex take part in a musical at his School called "How to Be a Pirate in Seven Songs."  The whole family very much enjoyed his performance.  The family also made it out to the Canmore Nordic Center for some cross country skiing and to the Bow river for some ice skating.  February brought birthdays!  It is hard to believe that Bennett is now 6 and Alex is 8!  Where does the time fly?  Ben celebrated at the Wildflower Arts Center building super cool robots with his friends.  Alex enjoyed his ice skating party at Westside Rec center so much last year that he decided to have a reprise this year.  Both boys had a great time at their parties.  The boys have been off school for the past 5 days becasue of teacher's convention and Alberta Family Day.  We took advantage of the extra long weekend and headed out to the Columbia Valley visiting Fairmont to downhill ski and soak in the hot pools, Nipika to cross country ski and Radium to hike and soak in the hot springs there.  We have just added a bunch of new photos to the January 2012 and February 2012 albums.
